Burning Sage to Signify a Transition
How long have you been burning sage? I haven't even started, but I know a lot of people do. What I've heard is it's used as a 'cleanse', and I think I see why. It never made much sense to me. I get that people may do things they later feel ashamed of... is this the type of cleanse we're talking about? Now I know it isn't. I was in my friend's house this weekend and she burned sage—"How long have you been burning sage?"—I felt like asking.
Sage is a tool. The smell is not delightful but it's very particular... and that's kind of the point. Burning sage is an olfactory experience that can be used to signify the moment has changed. You can burn sage to signify the end of the work day and start relaxing. You can burn sage to mark the end of a cycle and start renewal. You can burn sage to start doing things meaningful to you and loved ones—to transition into a new state of doing.
