A Bitter National Celebration
It happened again. This time, a young man opened fire at the crowds celebrating 4th of July in the parade of Highland Park, a wealthy suburb of Chicago suburb. At least seven people died and dozens were injured by gunfire. Right in America’s birthday... who would’ve thought? The national celebration quickly soured as the news reported the incident country-wide.
In a year marked by tragic loss of life and gun violence, it is only fitting to ask… just what is it that we celebrated this Fourth of July? Is it the coming together as a nation? Because our nation is at odds with itself, unpleased with its makeup, dissatisfied with its direction. On Monday night, as millions of Americans stared at the fireworks, there was no clear or easy way of feeling. A sobering reminder of the challenges ahead for this experimental nation of ours.
