Unfairness in Food Delivery
-
Public restrooms in New York City are essential to the quality of life food delivery workers. 'Quality of Life' is the felt quality of the experience you have every day. There was heavy traffic today at the public restroom at Union Square Park, mostly food delivery workers, one after the other. The service level of the facility was not ideal, non-ideal since they are delivering your food.
By turning everyone into their own boss, food delivery platforms like Uber, Doordash, and Grubhub avoid many of the crucial costs of providing the service. If the service were properly structured, deliver workers would have waiting docks where they could idle comfortably, safely, and adequate sanitation facilities while their next delivery is assigned to them. Instead, delivery people wait in parks and city benches with no heating or air conditioning. The cost of providing waiting space and bathrooms are passed on to City of New York by food delivery companies.
