Database, Extension of Memory
Thinking about the way CRM software provides augmented ability to keep more in mind, to mind more than usual. CRM software helps companies record aspects of past interactions with their customers. When you call customer support on the phone, a file about you becomes available to the sales or customer representative. If you were the representative, its as if you approached the customer wearing "augmented reality" goggles and all their info popped visually around the them; number of years as customer, their last order, notes from the last call they made taken by another representative. It’s quite literally a memory. You can think of the database as the augmentation of human memory and the CRM as an optimized interface to interact with said digital memory.
The role of the database for the modern corporation is also that of a memory. It’s a memory for an entity non-corporeal, a place that records aspects of the operation and interactions with the world, for purposes of automated process or processes with human-in-loop. View of memory through CRM, comparable to view of world with infographic augmentation, memory "superimposed" over aspects of world-in-view.
