About the Author
SOMETIME IN MARCH 2020 — This, what it is, I do not know yet. A collection of accumulated knowledge, ideas, memories, fact, surmise... who knows. Anyway, what I once considered private, seems to be public. The other day I woke up to this most strange thought... People rarely think of their experience as such, but then they are always trying to make it better. There is an ever-present force we are not fully considering, a natural 'drift' taking us to places that feel right for a short while but then regrettable the next.
LATER — Awakening occurs when people come in touch with the real world. This is the problem with technology... it builds distance between people and Reality. We experience the world through television and rely on the Internet for social communication. We use machines instead of our bodies and when our bodies fail us, machines keep us alive. When we do not feel life, we do not feel what it is to be alive. Such is the paradox of technological mediation.
About Me
I am Raul Garza, author and publisher of this site. I work out of independent motivation to write non-fiction that inspires meaningful self-reflection. Everything I write is self-published. My work is an inquiry on the media phenomenon, the mystifying process by which Reality interacts with itself. I explore the nexus of mind and physical world to shine light on the ethereal realm of feeling and aesthetics. I also revisit the circular connection between culture and technology to caution against the transformational effects of technology over human behavior. Many have tried before me and many will try again.
Living through the rise of the public Internet in the 90's let me bear witness to the violent changes it imposed on the human experience. I am now convinced technology is equally a tool for progress and flourishing as it is a means for control and exploitation.
I grew up in the industrial town of Monterrey, a place in Northeast Mexico known for its breweries, steel mills, and mountains. I was raised by a single mother and her twin sister, whose care and loving devotion indelibly marked my perception of the world. My father's influence was subtler but equally affecting. He had a scattered presence in my life, the culmination of which taught me the true meaning of forgiveness.
My background is in chemical engineering. I learned principles of technology R&D working under the mentorship of a polyester industry veteran. In 2016, I moved to the United States to attend business school at MIT. In 2019, I moved to New York City, where I live with my husband to this day.
