Media induces Perspectival Reorientation
In Experience, engaging media induces a "perspectival" reorientation, a change in perspective relative to object and surroundings. The change feels like a reframing, in effect a re-contextualization. Change in perspective relative to media happens to optimize engagement for efficacy in task-at-hand. Perspective is now structured around the object. Perspectival reorientation speaks of attentional realignment.
Perspectival reorientation can manifest as a shift in Visual Frame. In a first case, you use a knife to cut a tomato, i.e., you engage an artifact to engage another. Visual frame is adjusted to the touchpoint between knife and tomato. Perspective shifts to best serve the object of activity. Special attention is deployed, general attention diminished.
Perspectival reorientation can also manifest as shift in Aural Frame. In a second case, you eavesdrop on a neighboring conversation, i.e., you engage a local dynamic. Special attention is deployed. Sounds in immediate spatial proximity move background, the engaged conversation foreground.
You can also feel perspectival reorientation very clearly when smoking a cigarette. Eyes are pulled to the tip while lighting up, sometimes while taking a drag.
